Bankstown surprises Sharks in WABL Basketball

The second placed Sutherland Sharks were expected to win their encounter with Bankstown Bruins (4th) in the men’s Waratah Australian Basketball League (WABL) last Saturday at Sutherland Basketball Stadium. This looked like being the case when the Sharks led by 6 at the end of the first quarter (29 – 23). However, the Bruins then won the next two quarters by 7 to lead by 66 – 58 going into the final term. The Sharks came back to take the final quarter by 28 – 22 but it was not enough and they lost the match by 88 - 86.

Top scorers for the Sharks were Brendon Gleeson with 23 points followed by Steven Hall (19) and Blake Henricks (15).

The ninth placed Sharks women were not expected to match the table topping Bruins and this proved to be the case. However the scores were closer than many fans expected with the Sharks trailing by 9 at the main break (39 – 30) before going down 65 – 53. Top scorers for the Sharks were Peta Kneen (18), Merle Hall (12) and Jacki Nicholson (10)
