Sharks hunted down by Newcastle in WABL Basketball
With a dominant third quarter performance, the Newcastle Hunters proved too strong for the Sutherland Sharks in the men’s Waratah Australian Basketball League last weekend. The Hunters had got away to a 19 – 13 lead in the first quarter but then the Sharks pegged them back to 40 – 37 by half time.
In the third quarter Newcastle were rampant scoring 24 points to 10 and with the score at 64 – 47 this put the game seemingly beyond the Sharks reach. The Sharks finished more strongly scoring 22 – 18 in the final term but ultimately went down 82 – 69. Top scorers for the Sharks were Blake Henricks (21), Brendon Gleeson (16) and Brendan Clowry (11).
The women’s team had a close encounter with Newcastle. Unfortunately the locals allowed the Hunters to dominate in the first half to take a lead of 35 – 24 at the main break. The Sharks finished strongly in the second half scoring 38 – 31 but did not have enough time to make up the full deficit and ultimately lost by 66 – 62. Leading scorers for the Sharks were Peta Keen (20), Merle Hall (14) and Melinda Bartlett (11).
After the Easter break both the Sharks teams have an away double header taking on the Hornsby Spiders on Saturday April 18 and then the Bankstown Bruins on Sunday 19 April.
