Sutherland’s Craig Stevens retires from swimming

As reported in Australian Swimming News, Craig Stevens recently announced his retirement from competitive swimming after a career spanning a decade and two Olympics. The popular team member who will be remembered for his decision to give up his place in the 400m in Athens to allow Ian Thorpe to win the gold medal will work with long-time sponsor Toyota.

Stevens has given the Australian Swimming Team a decade of service and has been a true ambassador for the sport after making his debut at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney. Over the next 10 years Craig represented his
beloved Telstra Dolphins at two Olympics, three FINA World Championships, two Commonwealth Games, two Pan Pacific Championships, one FINA World Short Course Championships, two Duels In the Pool, the Goodwill Games and the Japan International.

Can you imagine how many laps Craig Stevens has churned through at Sutherland Leisure Centre?

Apart from his major gold medals in the 4x200m at the World Championships in Barcelona in 2003 and the 2002 Pan Pacs in Yokohama, Stevo was an Olympic finalist in Athens in 2004, won silver in the 800 metres freestyle at the World Championships in 2007 in Melbourne where he also cracked 15 minutes in the 1500 before a career best of 14:53.18 to be ranked fourth all time Australian behind Grant Hackett, Kieren Perkins and Daniel Kowalski at the 2008 Olympic Trials.

Unfortunately for Craig Stevens he had qualified second behind Grant Hackett for the last Olympics but he had an injury prior to his Beijing campaign and was not able to perform at his best.

Aged 15 to 19 and want to play cricket in the West Indies?

A proposed NSW catholic boys’ tour is currently looking for players to go to the West Indies. The tour leaders are both high school teachers in catholic schools and have run the NSW CCC Opens team for the past few years.

They are looking for about 4-5 players of ages 15 - 19 who would be keen to tour in July this year. It would be a great opportunity for a young player to gain experience and enjoy learning another culture.

Players of any school background and ability are welcome. For further details contact, Justin Smith, one of the teachers from Marist College Kogarah (Kerry O’Keeffe’s old school) on 0447400616 or email: justin_smith@mckogarah.catholic.edu.au
