Sutherland’s junior cricket teams well positioned to reach semis.
With one round to play, Sutherland’s younger teams in Cricket NSW’s Inter-Association Shields competitions are well positioned to make the semi finals of their competitions. The Cawsey Shield (under 12) team is undefeated after 4 rounds of the five preliminary rounds and only needs a win next weekend to make the semis.
In the under 13s, Sutherland’s team (Gee Shield) leads its division after winning two games and having a bye in the first four rounds – a win in next weekend’s last round should result in a semi-final spot. The under 11 team (Creak Shield) should make next year’s semi-finals if it can defeat North Shore next weekend.
Outstanding individual performances from last weekend’s fourth round included:
Grinham’s 75 in the under 13’s win over the ACT; J Trajcevski’s 70 in the under 14’s loss to Newcastle; J Thorne’s 3 wickets for 9 runs in Sutherland under 11’s defeat of Manly Warringah; N Panich’s 4 wickets for 10 runs in Sutherland under 15s loss to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hills.
Results of last weekend’s fourth round for all Sutherland teams were:
Under 11 (Creak Shield):
Sutherland 4/44 (J Cox 31) defeated Manly Warringah 43 (J Thorne 3/9)
Sutherland has now won three games from four and may make the semis if it can beat North Shore in the final round next weekend.
Under 12 (Cawsey Shield):
Sutherland 6/113 (N Marciante 30) defeated North Shore 81
Sutherland has won all four games so far and thereby leads its division.
Under 13 (Gee Shield):
Sutherland 3/159 (E Grinham 75, J Wood 35) defeated ACT 152 (O Selby 3/31)
Sutherland has won two games, had a bye and lost one in the first four rounds to lead its division.
Under 14 (Moore Shield):
Sutherland 141 (J Trajcevski 70) lost to Newcastle 8/170
Sutherland has one win a bye and a loss in the four rounds to date.
Under 15 (Weblin Shield):
Sutherland 73 lost to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hills 96 (N Panich 4/10)
Unfortunately Sutherland has yet to win a game.
Under 16 (Watson Shield):
Sutherland 4/123 (D Hunt 34, A Thorogood 35) defeated Canterbury Wests 121
Sutherland has now won three from four games but with the top two teams playing each other in the last round Sutherland would have to win outright to make the semis.

Gan’s young Sky Blues stretch undefeated run at Sutherland
Former Sutherland Sharks star Brendan Gan’s Sydney FC National Youth League team continued their undefeated run taking a solid 3-0 win over the Perth Glory in their round 8 clash at Seymour Shaw Park last weekend. Gan played a key role in Sydney’s first goal.
Striker Sean Rooney delivered on his promise to make the most of his goal-scoring chances, claiming a double to take the lead in the race for the competition’s golden boot, before Antony Golec rounded out the scoring with an emphatic drive in the final minute. Sydney FC club captain and youth league assistant coach Steve Corica was pleased the youngsters kept their momentum rolling, despite easing off in the second half of the game.
“They played some good football in the first half, not so good in the second, but then again they scored two goals,” he assessed. “So it was a comfortable win. They don’t want to take their foot off the peddle.”
It took just four minutes for the league leaders to stamp their authority on the contest - Chris Payne was at the heart of a dynamic move, showing blistering pace to leave Perth’s right hand defence for dead in a twenty metre surge before linking with Brendan Gan. The former Sutherland Shark peeled out to the left, before cutting the ball across the face where Rooney calmly slotted it home past the oncoming Perth goalkeeper.
Both sides dished up open and high-tempo football for the healthy crowd to enjoy, and Perth was lucky not to concede in a frantic five minute onslaught at the end of the first period. The best chance fell to Kofi Danning, but Glory goalkeeper Dejan Aleksic came off his line smartly to smother his attempt.
The Sky Blues started the second in a similar vein. Rooney and Danning came close to extending the lead, before Aleksic was forced into a double save, diving low to his right to parry Rooney’s drive at the near post, before smothering Gan’s effort on the rebound. For all Sydney’s dominance, Vedran Janjetovic had to make a smart save to keep his side ahead on the hour, hooking the ball away with his legs after it fell to Perth striker Anthony Skoric on the six-yard box.
Perth enjoyed their best passage as they tried to take the game to the Sky Blues, but Nick Tsattalios, on his return from national duty, got in behind and cut the ball back to Rooney on 72 minutes. Rooney skipped past his defender and curled the ball home off the right upright. The game looked to be petering out, but the young Sydney side put the icing on the cake when Sam Munro fed the ball across to Golec on the left, who drove home emphatically to round a comfortable 3-0 triumph.
“There are some good boys there,” Corica said afterwards. “I’m sure a few of them will get their chance in the first team soon.”
The Sky Blues’ next test will come on the road next weekend against Adelaide United.
