Locals win gold in Australian Championships; Sutherland doing well in NSW Premier Youth League; Local Basketball

Australian Age Swimming Championships

Erin Malone of Sutherland’s SLC Aquadot Club was the best performed local girl, taking out gold in the Girls 17 – 18 year 200m breaststroke event in 2.36.15. She had trailed ultimate silver medallist, Sara Marson by 0.49 seconds after 100m but then surged to take out the event by 0.55.

Stephen Parkes of SLC Aquadot took out gold in the 17 – 18 years 200m individual medley. He also won this event the previous year when he was 17.

Young gun Jaimie Stack of Cronulla Club showed his endurance over the championships. In a fast finish he took out the silver medal behind Blacktown City’s Michael Fell in the 14 year 100 metre butterfly on the first night of finals. Jaimie was 4th at the 50m turn and trailed Fell by 0.49 seconds but pegged him back to a margin 0.21secs to record 58.79.

Later on the same night, Jaimie competed for NSW in the 14 years medley relay and the team took out gold. Showing his versatility two nights later, he took part in the winning NSW 4 x 50m freestyle relay team.

Jordan White of Sutherland’s SLC Aquadot club, also took out a silver in the girls 13 year 100m backstroke event. Club mate Toneya Price came in 6th only missing out on bronze by 0.46 seconds. Jordan followed up on the fourth night with a 4th in 200m butterfly event just missing out on bronze by 0.32 seconds. On the last night Jordan again won silver in the 200m backstroke.

In the 16 year boys 200m butterfly Callum Timms of SLC Aquadot club came 6th in a fast final in the time of 2.05.97. With this time Callum would have won last year’s event!

Also taking out a sixth in the 14 year 200m backstroke final was Andrew Kennedy of the South Cronulla Club.

Under 13, 16 and 18 teams do well in NSW Premier Youth League

After 8 rounds of the NSW Premier Youth League Football (Soccer) Sutherland Shire Sharks are in second spot out of 14 clubs in the Under 13s and Under 18s and are running third in the Under 16s. Both the 14s and 15s are struggling down the lower end of their tables.

In the “local derby” against Wollongong Wolves the results were split with each club winning two and the fifth was drawn. However, the club had a relatively good 7th round against Sydney Wanderers winning two grades and drawing the other three.

Results for Sutherland in the last two rounds are as follows:

Round 8 on 14 April against Wollongong Wolves at Seymour Shaw ground on April 14

  • U13: won 3 nil
  • U14: lost 4 - 1
  • U15: lost 4 - 1
  • U16: drew 1 all
  • U18: won 3 - 1

Round 7 against Sydney Wanderers at Hajduk Stadium on Easter Monday (April 9)

  • U13: won 4 nil
  • U14: drew 1 all
  • U15: drew 4 all
  • U16: won 1 nil
  • U18: drew 1 all
