Matt McEwan is the owner of Parkside Sports Physiotherapy, where working with you, not on you, is part of their treatment program. Matt said that working with his patients, as opposed to just working on them, helps them with a speedy recovery.
Matt is a qualified Sports Physiotherapist, with a Masters Degree in Sports Physio and is recognised by the Australian Physiotherapy Association and Sports Physiotherapy Australia as a Sports Physiotherapist.
A keen sportsman in his day, Matt decided that his practice would dedicate itself to focusing on musculoskeletal injuries, especially those that were sports-related.
Over the 11 years Parkside has been operating, Matt has treated some of the biggest sporting teams in Sydney such as the Sydney Kings, Sydney Swans and the Australian Women’s Road Cycling team, the Sydney University Sandpipers Netball team and New South Wales Institute of Sport Netball, u/19 and u/21 State teams as well as national and world championship rowers, confirming his reputation as a respected health professional.
“I love the satisfaction of helping people overcome their injuries and return to the field,” Matt said.
Four years ago, with the growing reputation of the practice, Matt and his wife Meghan - who is also a physiotherapist at Parkside - decided to undertake a program with their accountancy firm to further develop the business. Since then, they have grown their business from the two of them as the only operating physios, to having at least three therapists treating patients at any one given time.
The additional therapists mean that Matt and Meghan have been able to keep up with the demands of a popular practice and being able to provide an all-round service for their clients. The additional staff also enables them to work a ‘rostering system’ whereby either Matt or Meghan are available to pick their girls up from school and take them to their sporting and social activities.
With his ‘do what it takes’ attitude, Matt is developing a number of products for triathletes and cyclists, where he will analyse their bike set, conduct video analysis and flexibility studies. This information will help with the athletes’ performance, durability and injury prevention.
If there’s one thing Matt would like the general public to know, it’s that in order to treat such things as back pain, they don’t need to visit their doctor first – they can make an appointment with a physiotherapist as they are universally recognised as experts in their chosen fields.
A long-time resident of the Sutherland Shire and a dedicated and passionate family man, Matt likes to remain active by doing the odd triathlon and mountain bike riding. However his preference is to do activities that include the whole family so he can spend as much time away from work with them as possible.
