Internet for dummies

Going online does not have to be an overly complicated or expensive exercise. The Federal Government is funding free and low cost training for all SMEs contemplating the web for the first time

First I should point out that I personally have a library full of the dummy book type series acquired over many years, with titles covering from basic HTML (getting old now) through to marketing videos with YouTube (latest edition).

What’s more, I’m not the only so-called geek who uses these well researched and well written texts to more fully understand certain aspects of the online world.

So when I say ‘internet for dummies’ I mean courses, delivered by experienced practitioners in the field, explaining in everyday language what exactly is required to get a small business online.

The Small Business Online (SBO) program will be delivered (both
face-to-face and online) by the Illawarra ITeC in all the areas covered by Your Online Community (and related SMARTPAGES directories) over the next 18 months.

Free courses in most of Southern NSW and parts of Sydney will be delivered from March 2010 in three topic areas: Getting Started, Stepping Up and Advanced.

All SBO courses will be promoted in this e-zine.

Getting Started:

Getting Started usually means building a website but there are in fact cheaper, and quicker to implement, alternatives to promoting your business online. Making sure you get the website you need at a price you can afford is covered.

Stepping Up:

After several years with a basic website (Page Rank of PR0 or PR1) your firm wants to get serious. This course provides a step-by-step guide to establishing a greater presence online (being found by search engines), with an emphasis on search-ability and attracting traffic.

Advanced:

Your company has operated a moderately sized website with its own CMS for many years (Page Rank of PR2 or PR3) but now wishes to establish a truly national and/or global online presence, perhaps including an electronic shopping facility or video facility. If appearing Top10 on Google has become a fundamental requirement this course is for you.

I think these three SBO courses are an excellent idea and the Federal Government should be applauded for funding this initiative which is linked to the National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout.
