INTO AFRICA

World Cup Spawns Tourist Traffic WORLD Game tragics returning from the World Cup have become ambassadors for tourism in the Dark Continent

Many we have spoken to are already planning to go back either on individual or family holidays, culling voluminous travel information on wide-ranging themes from wildlife safaris to luxury.

One they should consider is the return - after an absence of a few years - of the African rail safari Shongololo Express.

Their Dune Express 12-day program heads through the canyon and desert habitats of Namibia, the South African neighbour which claims "ownership" of the legendary Kalahari Desert, home to (among other species) the comical, pop-up-and-disappear meerkats which have a cult following through their Manorly shenanigans in their television special.

The tours, available through long-time African travel special Bench International in Sydney, operate from Johannesburg to Namibian capital Windhoek and vice versa.

The program includes wildlife viewing in Etosha National Park, three days in an around the seaside town of Swakopmund, which retains much of its early settlement German flavour, then an unforgetable transit of the region's moonscape hinterland.

The price - from $3595pp - includes accommodation on the train, breakfast and dinner, airport transfers, and the daily sightseeing excursions in airconditioned vehicles carried on the train.

Make Bench International (1800 221 451) or their website www.benchinternational.com.au, your first call before you make your back-to-Africa plans.
