SMART IDEAS
by Andrew Connery

We know it will cost $43 billion

But what exactly will it deliver for the average taxpayer?

The geeks call it rich content. But for most people this means video, seen in a way most people would not even dream about.

Imagine full screen digital TV quality with no delays. Any film or TV show you want, when you want to see it, and also multiple windows with live video streaming simultaneously.

Of course the really big difference will be the content.

NBN will be the catalyst for local video to go main stream. User Generated Content will become pervasive.

One can easily imagine the boon to tourism where all of a region’s features and amenities can be seen in real time. Webcams tracking whales swimming up the coastline etc.

And when it comes to buying local services or hiring a tradie you will be able to check out testimonials and reviews from other locals (on directories such as YOC’s SMARTPAGES) and even talk to them in real time.

Videos taken from Smartphones (everyone will have one) will be downloaded to local websites.

This evolution of the internet will see a move to localised portals (online communities) which will also overcome two major problems currently levelled at the internet.

Videos hosted on servers within this country immediately become governable by Australia and its laws. What’s more, local portals will be moderated by local residents (not robots) so the issues of pornography and other ‘illegal’ or inappropriate content on the likes of YouTube will be largely addressed.

I would emphasise here I am not talking about censorship or filtering – both of which I strongly disagree with.

Free Online Training for SMEs

Your Online Community (publishers of this e-zine and SMARTPAGES directories) recently gained (in conjunction with The Illawarra ITeC) a grant to deliver training online as part of the Small Business Online program a federally funded initiative in support of the NBN.

Courses will include:
• Getting started online free
• Expert tips on improving online sales
• Increasing returns on existing websites

The ITeCeLearning courses will be delivered over the next 18 months online and
face-to- face throughout southern NSW and up to Parramatta and Blacktown.

A brand new eCampus is presently under construction – details will be released
in this e-zine. Courses are scheduled to start in May 2010 with final dates to be confirmed.
