It’s not just the body-mind connection

All of the things we do for our personal progress help but ultimately it is down to each one of us to find that connection

We hear a lot these days about improving our bodies with exercise, yoga, supplements, correct nutritious food, vegan, non dairy, wheat free, yeast free. In fact we seem to be bombarded with information, often confusing as to what to do with our bodies to keep them healthy and prolong life.
Then the researchers come in and tell us that we need to read, socialise and keep active in order to not get Alzheimer’s and enjoy unfogged brains. Couple that with the myriad supplements facing us in health food stores all good for you and is it any wonder the poor consumer doesn’t know what the right thing is to do?
Then we have the therapists telling us we need to work though our ‘emotional baggage’ in order to be free of issues. Just work at it and eventually you will be ‘fixed’. Now does anyone out there know just one person with NO issues? I sure don’t and if you do then you’d better check if they are human.
Add to that the religious conflicts of the world, the natural remedies vs mainstream medicine conflict, pollution, the fact smoking is bad for you, the fact many people are either workaholics, chocoholics, alcoholics or spendaholics, the fact that there are a lot of shonky people out there capitalizing on someone else’s misfortune, whatever it may be and is it any wonder that the world seems to thrive on negativity?
The fact is that there isn’t only one answer. It isn’t about just looking after your body and your mind. It isn’t just about taking the right supplements or getting enough sleep or clearing up your emotional baggage. It isn’t about giving up chocolate or working less or spending wisely or putting Johnny in the right school. You could knock yourself out doing all that and it’s still not enough. So what is?
Maybe there is something out there a bit more than the body mind connection? Maybe there is a deeper connection that’s needed. Maybe there needs to be a balance between a whole lot of things like your energy and the way it’s working in your body, your spirituality (no I am not talking religion) and then take into account your mind, emotions and physical body.
By spirituality I mean your base foundation ethics and values. Your connection with how you feel about yourself and the world, and God, if you are that way inclined. When was the last time you checked in on what your values really are? A stock take of how YOU feel, never mind what the world says you should feel. A check up to see what you think is honest, where your boundaries are, what you really believe is right and wrong without letting the world sweep us up in what we should think and people advising us as to the right thing to do. A tune in to how you feel about yourself and how you measure up to what you think of you. A tune in to something higher on a spiritual basis, if you are that way inclined. A meditation on what your next direction is in life.

Put your hands on your heart and ask yourself…who do I really love? Who really loves me? Do I translate that enough into my life to let them know how I really feel or do I pull away? How do I know they really love me? Do they show it? Do I need more nurturing and love? And whilst the therapists and philosophers tell us that we must love ourselves and nurture ourselves, and I don’t dispute that, there is no amount of self love that can replace that moment of a hug from a loved one, or a kind word at the right time, or the caring in someone’s voice.
So while we must be aware not to throw all the good things, like working on ourselves and personal development, out the window we need to find a balance where our spiritual selves, our real self and the connection of the body mind meet. The connection with the body mind is not enough. It will never be enough because we are not just physical beings.
We talk about heart to heart connections and then in the next breathe talk about that very person behind their back. We talk about positivity then gossip about Suzy when she’s not there. We talk about peace and spend money on new warfare. We talk about hope and consider parliamentary bills for euthanasia. We talk about freedom and dominate each other in relationships. It just doesn’t work.
It is only when we have built that connection with our spirit and our physical that we will have some reconciliation in all this. We have a life force within us. Wherever it came from would write a thousand articles so we won’t go there, but undeniably we are alive and we are conscious. That life force has forms of expression through our inward beliefs and feelings and we will call them the spiritual connection. We then have our thoughts and our emotions which translate into tendencies set up as habits and express themselves through the senses of our bodies. This is what makes this vehicle I call ‘me’. This is true for every one of us. It is only when all these connect and we are conscious of how that connection works, how it translates and what it means to ‘me’ that we can come to some reconciliation within ourselves regarding the type of life we lead.
All of the things we do for our personal progress help but ultimately it is down to each one of us to find that connection. Once it is found there is no doubt as to where you fit in, who you are as a person, how you interconnect in this world. However this does not mean you don’t still have issues, baggage and negative emotions. You are human and those things are a part of being human and they are not necessarily bad. They are the very catalysts that make you search, learn and grow.
So when someone talks of their body mind connection, next time, just stop a minute and reflect on what they really are talking about.
