Peterson wins Shark Island Bodyboarding qualifying event
Shaun Peterson has won last weekend’s bodyboarding Brett Young Memorial trials at Cronulla to qualify for Cronulla’s Shark Island Challenge. Others to qualify were Doug Showell, Brendan Ryan, and Josh Pollard. They join invited bodyboarders for the Shark Island Challenge event which is being held from 7 to 27 July.

Sutherland Sharks women win basketball championship
The Sutherland Sharks women’s team have won the 18 years Women’s Division 1 title in the Sydney basketball championships. The Sharks defeated the Northern Suburbs Bears 64 – 42 in the final. Two other local teams participated in the finals but missed out on the titles. The 14 Women Division 1 team went down to the Hills Hornets in the final while the 16 Men Division 1 team.
The results of the finals involving local teams in the recent Sydney Junior basketball championships were as follows:
14 Women Division 1: Hills District Hornets 46 def Sutherland Sharks 34
16 Men Division 1: Northern Suburbs Bears 101 def Sutherland Sharks 53
18 Women Division 1: Sutherland Sharks 64 def Northern Suburbs Bears 42
Lilli Pilli take two State Cup soccer titles
Lilli Pilli U14 and U16 teams became State Cup Champions for 2009 last weekend. Unfortunately the other local teams in the grand finals of the knockout competition missed out on becoming champions. The results involving local teams are as follows.
Under 16 Boys: Lilli Pilli defeated Brookvale 3-0
Under 18 Boys: Lilli Pilli defeated Wakehurst 2-0
Under 21 – Robertson Cup: Kemps Creek defeated Gymea 4-0
All Age Men – Cullinan Cup: Eastwood St. Andrews defeated Miranda 3-0
Over 35: Castle Hill defeated Gymea 2-0
Under 14 women: Bossley Sports defeated Lilli Pilli 2-1
All Age Women: Uni of Wollongong defeated Cronulla RSL 3-0
July School Holidays Football Coaching Clinic
A coaching clinic will be held by Sutherland Sharks Football Club in the school holidays for players who want to improve their skills or just have some football fun during the holidays. You will receive a ball and Sharks drink bottle and be coached by representative coaches and first grade players.

Newcastle shocks Sutherland Sharks in Waratah Basketball
The bottom placed Newcastle Hunters men’s team have shocked the visiting Sutherland Sharks men’s team in the Waratah basketball clash last weekend. The Hunters took a one point lead into half time (52 – 51). At the end of the third term the Sharks had levelled at 76 apiece. However, the Sharks 7 man roster could not maintain the pressure against Newcastle’s 10 man team in the final term which the Hunters won 34 -18 to take the match by 110 – 94.
Top scorers for Newcastle were Mathew McGovern (34), Mathew Cook (24), Mathew Mujic (15) and Adoc Makwai (14). For the Sharks Brendon Gleeson and Luke Davies both scored 17, Steven Hall picked up 16, while both Blake Stroh and Blake Henricks scored 14.
After the Sharks loss they dropped from 6th to 8th on the ladder while the Hunters still sit at the bottom of the ladder.
Next Saturday (July 11) both Sutherland Sharks Waratah Basketball league teams host the Norths Bears at Sutherland Basketball Stadium. The women’s game tips off at 5pm while the men’s begins at 7pm.

Sutherland’s 16s match Berries in Premier Youth League
Sutherland Shark’s under 16 Premier Youth League team is sitting at the bottom of the table (12th) but was undaunted when it took on the 6th placed West Sydney Berries last weekend. The team was able to belie its lowly position by holding the Berries to a one all draw.
The top placed Sharks 14s continued their winning form with a comprehensive display to defeat the Berries by 3 nil. The 15s match was postponed but the Sharks still hold down the 5th play-off spot. After their 2 nil win Sutherland’s 18s are in 3rd position on the ladder.
Results for the round 18 played last weekend against West Sydney Berries were:
Under 13: Sutherland lost 4 - 2
Under 14: Sutherland won 3 nil
Under 15: match postponed
Under 16: Sutherland drew 1 all
Under 18: Sutherland won 2 nil
The next round is to be played from Saturday 11th July with the Sutherland Sharks Premier Youth League teams taking on the Sydney Tigers at Seymour Shark Park beginning with the under 13s at 9am.

As reported previously Sydney is hosting the 2009 World Masters Games involving over 28 sports from October 10 to 18 for social to elite athletes. Sutherland Shire venues will host some of the basketball games.
