Sydney FC to play two games in Sutherland Shire
Sydney FC is currently preparing for the new A-League season with a string of pre season friendlies. One of the highlights of the Sky Blues’ pre season campaign will be their trial clash with Hyundai A-League newcomers, the North Queensland Fury at Shark Park in Cronulla on Saturday, June 27th.
The trial match is being staged in cooperation with the Cronulla Sharks and tickets for this match are now on sale through Ticketek. The friendly against the Fury will be an historic occasion, offering Sydney football fans their first opportunity to see North Queensland and former Liverpool great, Robbie Fowler in action.

The North Queensland side also boasts a host of former Sydney FC stars, including Robbie Middleby, Brendon Santalab and Jacob Timpano, adding a real air of rivalry to the occasion. The Sydney FC squad includes former Sutherland Shark, 21 year old Brendan Gan.

Sydney Comets surprise Sutherland Sharks in WABL basketball
In last weekend’s Waratah Australian Basketball League (WABL) clash the third placed Sutherland Sharks were expected to dominate the Sydney Comets who are running 6th.
In the first half the expectations looked likely to be realised with the Sharks getting steadily getting on top to lead by 55 – 48 at half time. However after the main break the Comets came out firing and took the third term by 28 – 15 to lead by 6 going into the final term. The Sharks were stunned into action and won the final quarter by 30 – 15 to take the match by 100 – 91.
Top scorer for the Sharks was Blake Henricks with 29 followed by Brendon Gleeson (18) and Brendan Clowry (17). For the Comets Michael Seckold (30) and Blake Borgia (28) dominated the scoring.
In the women’s game the 9th placed Sharks took on the Comets who are running 2nd. As anticipated the Comets were too strong winning every quarter to take the match by 63 – 41. Top scorer for the Sharks was Melinda Bartlett with 14 while Gail Henderson (14) and Tara Murphy (12) were best for the Comets.
The next round for both the men’s and women’s teams is on Saturday June 13 against Bankstown Bruins with tip off at Sutherland Basketball Stadium at 5pm for the women and 7pm for the men.
Blacktown City shades Sutherland Sharks in Premier Youth League
In last weekend’s round 13 matches at Gabbie Stadium, Blacktown City’s Premier Youth League soccer teams just got the better of the Sutherland Sharks by winning 2 matches, losing 1 and having two draws.
Full results for last round’s games between Sutherland Sharks and Blacktown City were as follows.
Under 13: Sutherland Sharks drew 5 all
Under 14: Sutherland Sharks won 1 nil
Under 15: Sutherland Sharks lost 3 - 2
Under 16: Sutherland Sharks drew nil all
Under 18: Sutherland Sharks lost 2 - 1
After the round, Sutherland Sharks 14s are best placed of the local sides sitting in second spot, although due to washouts they have played at least one more game than all the other teams in the top 5. The Sharks 18s also benefitting from extra games are in third position on their ladder. Next best for the Sharks is the 15s who just sit outside the play-off positions in 6th spot.
The next round is to be played from Saturday 6th June with the Sutherland Sharks Premier Youth League teams taking on Bankstown City at home at Seymour Shaw Park, Miranda beginning with the under 13s at 9am.

Sutherland Shire to host Basketball at Sydney’s World Masters games
Sydney is hosting the 2009 World Masters Games and basketball is going to be taking part, utilising six venues across Sydney. There is still time to form a team and register for the event.
The nominated venues include two Sutherland Shire venues at Menai and Sutherland. The venues are:
Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre, Cambridge Park
Sutherland Leisure Centre, Sutherland
Menai Indoor Sports Centre, Menai
Bankstown Basketball Stadium, Condell Park
Hills Sports Stadium, Castle Hill
Thornleigh Indoor Sports Centre ‘The Brickpit’, Thornleigh
Divisions:
Men and Women 30+ and 35+ and possibly a wheelchair division
Men and Women 40+, 45+ and 50+
Men and Women 55+, 60+, 65+ and 70+
Competition Dates: 10-18 October 2009.
A Grade – Premier: This elite grade is for teams consisting of players with international or national experience. At least two players should have international experience (played for their country). The other team members are expected to be at a state/ province/ elite Club player level.
B Grade – Competitive: This grade is for those players who compete in a high standard of domestic level basketball, such as A Grade in their local competition, and athletes who have represented their club or town in state/ province competition.
C Grade – Recreational: This grade is for those players who participate in non-competitive and/or lower grade leagues and for social and casual players.
There will be only one grade for the 70+ age category.
