Seeing Stars
by Patricia Shepherd

Your chart for the Month

Begining 21st January

AQUARIUS

It’s a happening world full of happening things for all our water bearers this birthday month and indeed the year. With so much planetary activity in your sign this is not a time to sit back and let things happen. Take the initiative, shock everyone by giving yourself a complete make over.

PISCES

The next few weeks heralds a more quiet and reflective period as you assimilate knowledge and insights gained. This introspection is what is needed now to help clarify your thoughts.

ARIES

Life is full of ups and downs and you are struggling to find a balance. You want to be out and about doing your own thing yet feel like you are being smothered by the needs of others. Use exercise to burn off that excess energy.

TAURUS

Intensity and drama seems to be the name of the game being played out for you at the moment. Don’t cling stubbornly to those belief systems, the grass can be greener on the other side.

GEMINI

With Mercury, the liaison officer colluding with Neptune, master of disguise, make sure you are up front and honest in all your dealings. If you are not sure of your facts and figures, say so because when Mercury goes retrograde next week they may come back at you.

CANCER

The week seems to see you with conflicting emotions as you experience a conflict between feelings and reason. Try not to get discouraged as you may be not be responding to the realities of a situation but more from a clouded perception.

LEO

This next month sees a shift of focus for our proud lions. Instead of prowling through the corridors of work, or pumping the iron at the gym, we see them hungering for a little more intimacy. This is not a time to go it alone but rather find out what you need from a relationship.

VIRGO

As you are not thinking clearly it would be easy for you to be misguided by the thoughts and opinions of others, particularly in the work place. If a situation or person is making you nervous, do not proceed until things are clarified to your satisfaction

LIBRA

Yes, we know you value quality and the finer things in life but as the bills come piling in it is time to think about balancing the budget otherwise the stresses and strains put on your relationship may cause conflict.

SCORPIO

As Venus, ruler of your solar relationship area makes her last contact with Pluto, your ruling planet, before he changes sign, you can expect issues that have been buried, put on the back burner or ignored to raise their head again. Don’t be put off by the intensity its there to help you move forward.

SAGITTARIUS

Your resolution this year was perhaps about restructuring your career goals enabling you to gain more satisfaction and recognition. Although initially you may worry about committing yourself to the extra responsibility, have confidence in your abilities.

CAPRICORN

Negotiations with professors, teachers, administrators or indeed government officials could prove beneficial at this time particularly if you have any far-reaching objectives that you are striving for. Do not give up, use patience and perseverance.

PRELUDE TO NEXT WEEKS FOCUS ON PLUTO

PLUTO

Discovered on 21 January 1930 at the Lowell Observatory, Arizona, U.S.A. after many years of calculation by Percival Lowell and other astronomers.

There are many curious features about this planet, which make it a kind of renegade. He doesn’t obey the rules. His orbit is elliptical, spending anything from 12 to 30 years in a sign, and there is a phase in the orbit where he is actually closer to earth than Neptune. He is still surrounded by controversy for it was only recently that astronomers demoted Pluto to ‘dwarf planet’

There is a fascinating synchronicity between the time when a planet is discovered and the emergence in society of values and experiences, which the planet represents symbolically. Pluto’s discovery in the 1930’s coincides with World War Two where for the first time psychological knowledge was used to further its ends. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 saw the only attacks with nuclear weapons in the history of warfare. Pluto was in Leo from 1938 – 1957. Positively it was around this time that we saw great inroads being made in psychotherapy and analysis. Here we see a picture being built acknowledging and being realistic about the darker side of human nature and taking steps to deal with it. Or of course we can refuse to acknowledge ‘the dark side’ demoting it back to the depths of our psych.

As Pluto stays so long in one sign, along with Uranus and Neptune, he is known as a generational planet meaning that each generation can be roughly characterized by the passage of Pluto through one sign. The sign that Pluto is in at birth provides a general indication of “a style of life” which typifies each generation or age-group. One of Dane Rudhyar’s key ideas is that every individual is born in answer to a problem or a need that seeks a solution.

What generation were you born into?

Pluto in Gemini – 1884 to 1913; Pluto in Cancer – 1913 to 1938; Pluto in Leo – 1938 to 1957; Pluto in Virgo – 1957 to 1971; Pluto in Libra – 1971 to 1983; Pluto in Scorpio – 1984 to 1995; Pluto in Sagittarius – 1995 to 2008; Pluto in Capricorn – 2008 to 2024

Pluto enters Capricorn on the 26th January, 2008 and then returns, by retrograde motion to Sagittarius mid June, 2008. This is his final transit in this sign before settling into Capricorn at the end of November, 2008 till 2024. Already we are getting an inkling of a need that seeks a solution with the Bali Summit. The world is now committed to launching negotiations that will produce a new global agreement by 2009 to battle the serious threat of climate change. The Sagittarian vision encompassing new social, national and international concepts now moves into the Capricorn phase to be incorporated into some concrete form.
