Sutherland has clean sweep in junior shields; Gee in semis
Sutherland finished the preliminary rounds of Cricket NSW Junior Shields with a bang last Sunday. All six Sutherland teams had wins.
The most important win was in the Gee Shield (under 13s) as Sutherland had to beat Central Coast to qualify for the semi-finals. Central Coast won the toss and sent Sutherland in. Sutherland scored steadily to be 5 for 169 after the allotted 60 overs. Five batsmen made good contributions to the score with opener J Haslam picking up 23, together with keeper H Smith who scored 29 and middle order batsmen J Brown (32), captain J Biviano (31) and B Drury (23 no).
Central Coast innings began disastrously as they lost their first 6 wickets cheaply and never recovered. When the weather stopped the game after 33.3 overs, Central Coast had only managed 7/77. Wicket takers for Sutherland were N Ellis with 3/2 from 5 overs, N Chamberlain with 1/5 off 4 overs and E Shewan with 1/19 off 7 overs. Sutherland’s fielders Smith and Agar also pulled off two run outs. With Sutherland winning the game on run rate it thereby qualified for the semi-finals of the competition.
Although Sutherland’s Moore Shield (under 14s) team finished third in the overall competition, it was second in Division 1. However under the rules of the competition only the top teams in each of the four divisions qualify for the semis irrespective of the position in overall table. Therefore, Sutherland missed out on the play-offs.
Overall placings and results of round 5 last weekend for Sutherland teams were as follows:
Creak Shield (under 11):
Sutherland 5/121 (N Marciante 47, A Roberts 43) defeated Canterbury Wests 73 (J Hess 3/8). Sutherland was 2nd in Division 3 and 7th overall in competition.
Cawsey Shield (under 12):
Sutherland 4/143 (E Grinham 46, T Smith 46) defeated Central Coast 7/126 (K James 34). Sutherland was 2nd in Division 3 and 5th overall in competition.
Gee Shield (under 13):
Sutherland 5/169 off 60 overs (J Biviano 31, J Brown 32) defeated Central Coast 7/77 off 33.3 overs (N Ellis 3/2) on run rate. Sutherland was 1st in Division 3 and 3rd overall in competition. Sutherland therefore qualified for semi-finals next year.
Moore Shield (under 14):
Sutherland 3/103 (A Whatley 38) defeated Illawarra 99 (A Jones 43, J D'Imperio 3/25). Sutherland was 2nd in Division 1 and 3rd overall in competition, but with four divisions Sutherland missed out on semis.
Weblin Shield (under 15):
Sutherland 8/177 (D Hunt 30, D Smith 36, A Thorogood 40) defeated Central Coast 3/66. Sutherland finished 13th overall.
Watson Shield (under 16):
Sutherland 169 (M Burg 56, M Fearnside 3/26) defeated Northern District 74 (L Eustace 31, N Lardner 4/11, A McRae 4/10). Sutherland finished 12th overall.
