Changing Suburbs?

After a recent review of the Sutherland Shire the Geographical Names Board is looking at making changes to suburb boundaries. If implemented, the new proposals are sure to affect many residents and businesses in the Shire

The rationale behind the changes is to make it simpler for emergency services, postal workers and the council, as well as ensuring that houses in the same street are regarded as, and known to be, in the same suburb.

The reality of real estate is that some suburbs have more expensive properties, adding to the status of the suburb and affecting house prices. By virtue of the revised boundaries, this may prove profitable for some residents but for others the opposite will be true.

Businesses could also be affected with registrations having to be changed, possible changes to insurances, business names and so on.

Clubhouse Not to Miss Out on Celebrations

As recently reported, the Cronulla Lifesaving Club is celebrating its centenary. As part of the celebrations, the clubhouse is undergoing its own makeover, with the building’s exterior being re-painted.

The new sandy colour is the same, or similar to, the original colour when the building opened in 1940.  Heritage officers proposed the colour after consultation with the club, the NSW Heritage Office and reviewing an old photograph being displayed in the Commonwealth Bank branch in Cronulla. The paint is being applied with anti-graffiti paint to maintain its appearance.

The adjoining sports complex will eventually also be painted the same colour as the clubhouse.

Lifeline Sutherland needs a Hand

Lifeline Sutherland helps people in the community everyday.  Now they’re looking for a helping hand.

The Wesley Mission-operated service in Sutherland is open five days a week. To meet demand, operators are hoping to extend the service to seven days.

There are currently about 60 volunteers who work on a fortnightly roster, each working one shift every two weeks. However Lifeline Sutherland needs more volunteers, if the service is to be extended.

Currently, on the two days that the service is closed, calls are directed to Lifeline Sydney.  While for some calls it doesn’t matter whether or not the person taking the call is a local, for many the connection with a Shire person really helps.

In certain circumstances there is an instant bond between the counsellor and the caller if the caller is a local, says Lifeline Sutherland Co-ordinator, Connie Easterbrook.

Most of the calls to the service are people with relationship problems or mental health issues. The mental health issues generally are from callers who know of an existing condition. They are aware of the warning signs and acknowledge that they need someone to talk to before the problem becomes a depression type issue.

“While Lifeline is considered a crisis counselling service, people should not feel that their problems are not important enough to talk or call about. The counsellors who work at the centres like to know that they are doing something to help their own community,” Connie said.

Reaching out is sometimes the hardest part and Lifeline Sutherland is there to help and listen.

Award Winning Council

Sutherland Shire residents have an award-winning council with the council winning in three categories at the 2007 Local Government Cultural Awards, held recently at Parliament House.

The council had three entries and won in each of the respective categories. Two of the programs, Faces of the Shire and Junk Theory, were joint winners in the Managing Culture, Cultural Infrastructure, Programs and Projects category.

The third award went to the council’s cultural planning and events manager, Tim Fong, who won the Brendan Hartnett Award for Individual Achievement in the Development of Cultural Programs category.

Rentstart for Sutherland

The Department of Housing is trialling a new initiative, Rentstart by Phone, with Sutherland picked as one of the two trial sites.

The new project is designed to make it easier for people on low income to rent a property, by assisting potential tenants to raise enough money for their bond and advance rent.

In 2006, the department reportedly provided close to $20 million in Rentstart assistance.

The trial program will be the first to go through the Department of Housing Contact Centre.
